Trivia Question: 12/4/2015

What is the name of the 'Sherlock Holmes' based detective in The Great Mouse Detective? Also--while the answer will largely be supposition on my part, why did they choose the name they did?

The name of the detective is Basil of Baker Street. My take on the choice of the name Basil or Sherlock would be largely due to one of the more famous Sherlock Holmes actors being Basil Rathbone. Basil Rathbone while usually playing villainous roles altered that image by straying from his usual persona to one that while not totally separate was still an alteration in that his character did not have such a focus on personal gain. So in naming the mouse detective Basil they were able to pay homage to a famous Sherlock actor, and they were also able to make the movie seem less a cut and dry Sherlock Holmes with animals movie, thus it might have felt more  original while still being familiar enough to Sherlock Holmes fans to enjoy it--particularly the adults who would be more likely to notice the more subtle Sherlock Holmes references.
